Frank van Os
Frank van Os was born in the Dutch city of Utrecht in 1977. At the age of 18 he went to study Architecture at the Technical University of Delft (’95-’96), but after one year he came to the conclusion that electronic music took a bigger part of his interest then architecture and quit his study in Delft to find a study that suited that interest more. After a year of orientation and one year of base course, he got admitted (’98) to the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht (HKU) for the study of Audio Design. He chose his specialization in Sound Synthesis and Studio Technology. In 2002 he graduated and did a follow up with a European Media Master of Arts curriculum (EMMA). During the next couple of years he worked in music production, but also developed a growing interest in ceramics, and started to collect 60’s and 70’s German Pottery. Finally his passion for ceramics resulted in getting a job at Mobach ceramics (2005), a small Dutch company that has a tradition of making pottery for more than hundred years. At this company he learned the craft of hand-building very large pots, that, together with its special metallic reduction glazes, Mobach is famous for. Next to working at Mobach, in 2012 Frank took the step to start his own ceramics practice, under the name Barst! Ceramics that gave him the opportunity to dive more into the experimental and artistic side of ceramics. With a work about the interaction between sound waves and ceramics made for an exhibition with the theme ‘Curiosity’ organised by the ceramist collective Utrechtse Aarde (Earth of Utrecht) in 2016, he won a two month residency at the European Ceramic Work Center (EKWC). During his residency he continued his research in the combination of sound, electronics and ceramics.
